TBILISI, July 2 – Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was welcomed Thursday at the Georgian presidential palace in Tbilisi at the start of an official visit.
The welcoming ceremony was held at the Palace of the President of Georgia, where Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili received the Uzbek leader.
During the visit, Mirziyoyev is scheduled to meet both Kavelashvili and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
The two sides are also expected to sign agreements and memorandums of understanding in several areas, according to Interpressnews.
Mirziyoyev is also expected to lay a wreath at the memorial to heroes who died for Georgia’s unity.
The Uzbek president will also attend the opening ceremony of a monument to Alisher Navoi, the 15th-century poet and thinker who is one of the central figures of Uzbek literature and culture.
The visit comes as Georgia is trying to strengthen its role as a transport and logistics link between Europe and Asia. Uzbekistan, a landlocked Central Asian country, is one of the states that plays a role in regional trade and transit routes through the South Caucasus.
