TBILISI, DFWatch–The International Criminal Court (ICC) has approved an investigation into alleged war crimes in the war between Russia and Georgia in 2008.

The decision was made by the judges Joyce Aluoch, Cuno Tarfusser and Peter Kovacs.

Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda requested permission to conduct the war probe on October 13 2015 and shortly after visited Georgia in order to prepare her case. The period of investigation will include events from July 1 to October 10, 2008.

In a statement she described alleged crimes committed by both parties, such as killing of ethnic Georgians, forced displacement and persecution, property damage, looting, deliberate attacks by Georgian armed forces against Russian peacekeeping forces and attacks by South Ossetian armed forces on Georgian peacekeeping forces.

Bensouda explained her goals of the probe in a video posted online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5Ny9DXdT6w

“There were several indications that looting was still going on in the village while we visited it, and there were credible reports that civilians, including old women, had been beaten, threatened and forced to leave the village as recently as last weekend.”
