High profile Tbilisi journalist detained in call centers case

Eliso Kiladze. (Interpressnews.)

TBILISI, February 19 – Georgian investigative journalist Eliso Kiladze has been detained in connection with the so called “call centers” case, according to Interpressnews.

The Prosecutor’s Office confirmed her detention and outlined the charges brought against her. According to prosecutors, Kiladze is charged under specific articles of Georgia’s Criminal Code related to actions connected to the ongoing investigation into alleged criminal activities involving call centers.

In a statement cited by Interpressnews, the Prosecutor’s Office said the charges concern conduct that, in its assessment, constitutes unlawful interference with investigative activities in the case.

Kiladze has rejected the accusations. Statements published by Georgian media quote her as denying wrongdoing and linking the case against her to her professional activities as a journalist.

The “call centers case” is an international investigation dating several years back, involving alleged large scale phone based fraud schemes that prosecutors say operated from offices in Georgia. Investigators have searched several locations, seized computers and documents, and frozen bank accounts as part of the probe.
