TBILISI, DFWatch–Russian soldiers a few days ago detained another Georgian for violating the border with breakaway South Ossetia.

Mamuka Samkharadze (36) was out collecting firewood near the village Kirbala, which borders on the breakaway region.

He was taken to a detention facility in Tskhinvali, the central town in the de facto republic.

Samkharadze’s family say they learned about his detention from another Georgian who also was detained for border violation but released yesterday.

Davit Tsertsvadze, a spokesperson for the local authorities, told Rustavi 2 that Samkharadze was detained three days ago, when he, like many other locals, was collecting firewood to prepare for winter. Tsertsvadze added that government bodies have been informed about the latest detention.

Detainees are released after paying a 2,000 rubles (USD 31) fine. Some also get released as a result of negotiations during regular field talks called the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism.
