TBILISI, September 23 – Public kindergartens in the Georgian capital have temporarily removed dairy products from their menus following an outbreak of stomach illness.
Tbilisi’s Nursery and Kindergarten Management Agency told Interpressnews on Tuesday that it had made the change on the recommendation of epidemiologists. The agency did not say how long the restriction would remain in place.
Children from public kindergartens were taken to hospitals on September 18 with symptoms initially described as possible food poisoning. Georgia’s National Center for Disease Control subsequently said laboratory findings indicated that norovirus was most likely responsible for the great majority of gastroenteritis cases.
Over a hundred children were hospitalized. There have been no reports of fatalities.
