On the eve of 11th anniversary of the 2008 August War between Russia and Georgia, Tbilisi city authorities are considering changing the name of Moscow Avenue.

“I confirm that this issue is on the table and included in our agenda,” Giorgi Tkemaladze, Chairman of Tbilisi City Council, said on Wednesday.

“When the decision is adopted, of course, we’ll inform all of you,” he said.

The opposition and civic groups have long demanded to rename the avenue, but both the previous and the current government have avoided the issue.

The avenue starts at the metro station Samgori and runs through “Zeemka” and “Africa”, two neighborhoods east of the city center.
