TBILISI, DFWatch–Georgian police have arrested two Ukrainian nationals on charges related to large-scale drug trafficking and possession, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The suspects, born in 2004 and 1998, were detained in the Imereti region during an operation by regional police. Authorities accuse the suspects of purchasing, storing, and facilitating the illegal sale of narcotic substances in particularly large quantities.
During searches of their homes and personal belongings, police seized 184 individually packaged doses of methadone. Additional drugs, reportedly prepared for distribution, were found in other locations indicated by the suspects. Law enforcement officers also confiscated packaging materials and adhesive tape used for preparing the narcotics for sale.
The case is being investigated under several sections of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which may lead to up to 20 years in jail or life imprisonment for drug-related offenses.
No information has been released yet about whether the suspects are believed to be part of a larger trafficking network or were operating independently. The arrests are part of a broader crackdown on narcotics trafficking in Georgia.
