TBILISI, DFWatch — Georgian Young Lawyer’s Association (GYLA) and other non-governmental organizations have proposed to the parliament that Tamar Gurchiani should be the new public defender.
“We, the members of non-governmental organizations, who work on human rights protection, agreed on one candidate. We want to suggest the candidature of Tamar Gurchiani to the new parliament on the post as public defender,” said Tamar Chugoshvili, head of GYLA.
Tamar Gurchiani is head of ISFED public council and has a a background from GYLA.
“She has high qualifications and a lot of experience as lawyer and human rights worker,” according to a written statement, which will be sent to the parliament. Over 40 representatives of non-governmental organizations and public unions signed this statement.
Tamar Gurchiani is not the only candidate.
Independent Expert’s Club recommends lawyer Lia Mukhashavria to the post.
“Three people are named as candidates for ombudsman. They are Tamar Gurchiani, Ucha Nanuashvili and Gela Nikolaishvili. We don’t have a group that will discuss about the candidates but as soon as the group is created, it will cooperate with society very actively,” said Sozar Subar, former public defender and prison minister candidate on October 10.
Everyone can suggest their candidate to the parliament, but the candidate will we picked by the president, a fraction or an initiative group of six deputies in parliament.
