Protesters rally in Tbilisi ahead of Independence Day

(Interpressnews.)

TBILISI, May 24 – Anti-government protesters marched through central Tbilisi on Saturday, as the government is preparing for the Independence Day festivities.

The demonstrators gathered near the Philharmonic Hall and then moved toward parliament in what has become known as the traditional “Saturday march.”

Participants carried Georgian and European Union flags. They also held a large banner with the slogan: “Georgia’s independence has been decided.”

The protest is part of the long-running movement against the ruling Georgian Dream party. Demonstrators are demanding the release of people detained during rallies and the calling of new elections.

The march comes as Georgia remains locked in a deep political crisis following the 2024 parliamentary election. The ruling party claims the election result was legitimate and that the opposition should continue its fight through constitutional politics. Opposition groups, however, claim that the election was falsified and that the government no longer has democratic legitimacy. Most opposition parties continue to boycott the national assembly.
