TBILISI, September 20 – A passenger train traveling from Batumi to Tbilisi was forced to turn back Saturday evening after a landslide left debris accross the railway tracks in western Georgia.
The landslide occurred near the village of Buknari in Kobuleti municipality, in Georgia’s Black Sea region of Adjara, as reported by Interpressnews.
Georgian Railway said train services had been disrupted for safety reasons after the landslide was reported close to the tracks. The Batumi-Tbilisi train turned back from Buknari.
Kobuleti Mayor Irakli Tsetskhladze told Interpressnews that nobody was injured in the incident. He said work to clear the affected area would begin shortly.
The landslide came as heavy rain hit Adjara, causing problems in several areas. In Batumi, the region’s main city, several streets were flooded following heavy rainfall.
