TBILISI, January 18 – Georgia’s fifth president, Salome Zourabichvili, said she met in Paris with the president of the European Broadcasting Union to discuss what she described as a severe crisis at Georgia’s public broadcaster.
Zourabichvili said the meeting with EBU President Delphine Ernotte focused on recent decisions taken by the management of Georgian Public Broadcaster, also known as GPB.
According to her statement, these decisions include the cancellation of television programs and the political targeting and dismissal of staff.
She also said the broadcaster has promoted an anti-European narrative, which she argued runs against the principle of editorial independence required under EBU membership rules.
During the meeting, Zourabichvili said she handed Ernotte a document prepared by GPB employees that outlines alleged violations in detail.
Georgia’s public broadcaster has been criticized for aligning with the ruling party.
