TBILISI, DFWatch–Georgia’s State Security Service has arrested three persons; among them, a former deputy defense minister, in connection with the alleged embezzlement of over 1.3 million GEL (approximately USD 480,000) in public funds.
According to the SSS, the case involves the misuse of funds allocated for the purchase of medical equipment for the Ministry of Defense in 2023. Investigators at the agency’s anti-corruption unit allege that the suspects orchestrated a scheme using their official positions to inflate prices and direct procurement contracts to companies with close personal ties.
Among those arrested are the former deputy minister (identified as G.Kh.), the former head of the ministry’s procurement department (V.Gh.), and a close relative of the former Minister of Defense (V.M.), who allegedly promised guaranteed contract wins to pre-selected companies.
Authorities claim that fake bids and fabricated invoices were used to create the appearance of competition while rerouting contracts through a chain of connected firms. The medical equipment was then sold to the ministry at significantly above-market prices.
The investigation is ongoing, and could lead to further arrests. If convicted, the suspects face prison sentences of seven to eleven years under Georgia’s criminal code.
