Bokeria slams ‘double standards’ after arrest of Droa leader

TBILISI, September 15 – Giga Bokeria, leader of the small opposition party Federalists, blasted the detention of Elena Khoshtaria, the head of the opposition group Droa.

Bokeria described the move as “another shameless example of double standards” by what he called the “unconstitutional regime of Bidzina Ivanishvili,” the billionaire founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party. In his statement, Bokeria argued that for years the authorities had either tolerated or downplayed incidents in which government supporters vandalized opposition offices or attacked political rivals. “For this, no one was punished,” he said.

He compared the latest case to that of opposition figure Megi Diasamidze, claiming that when government critics were targeted, the response from officials was to escalate matters into criminal prosecution rather than treat them as minor administrative issues. According to Bokeria, the same pattern is now visible in Khoshtaria’s detention.
