TBILISI, DFWatch – The newly inaugurated Russian president Vladimir Putin Friday paid a visit to the border between Russia and the disputed region Abkhazia, signing a new treaty about railways.

Mr Putin turned up at Psou, a border crossing which Georgia considers closed, and met the de facto president of Abkhazia, Alexander Ankvab.

Abkhazian news agency Apsnypress reports that Ankvab and Putin inspected the crossing of citizens and vehicles at Psou, and discussed the organization of border and customs inspection of passengers, transport and cargo, the Abkhazian news agency writes.

Russia’s transport minister and Abkhazia’s economy minister signed a protocol ‘On Amendments to the Agreement between the governments of Abkhazia and Russia on the direct railway communication.’

Afterwards, the Abkhaz president congratulated Putin on his election as President of the Russian Federation.
