TBILISI, DFWatch–Two people died in a fire at a market in Batumi on Sunday. One person is in hospital in a critical condition.

The victims are a married couple in their fifties, Temur and Nani Rizhvadze, while the third injured person is Davit Putkaradze, 51.

The fire started at the Khopa market on Sunday at noon during refurbishing work. It spread to other shops that were selling fireworks. About 600 square meters caught fire.

Media reported the detention of the owner of a shop where there was refurbishing work going on. The Interior Ministry would neither confirm nor deny the detention, but said that an investigation has been launched on the basis of article 187 of the Criminal Code about damaging or destroying property.
