TBILISI, DFWatch–Police in Georgia Wednesday detained a suspect in the murder of a transgender woman in Tbilisi the day before.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the 26 year old, who lives in Tbilisi, killed the transgender woman because of a disagreement about money.
The ministry says the conflict between the two started because the victim owed him some money, and had failed to return it for several months.
The attacker fatally wounded the victim, then set her flat on fire and fled. The ministry states that the suspect has admitted the charges.
As DF Watch reported yesterday, the victim was a trans woman who has appeared in several TV shows advocating sexual minority rights.
Investigators are not classifying the murder as a hate crime, but the organization Identoba, which works with LGBT rights, has called on the Interior Ministry to make clear whether this was a hate crime or not. They stressed in a statement that the police are not qualified to solve homophobic crimes and investigate them as crimes without aggravating circumstances.
