Supreme Court declines to hear media director’s appeal

TBILISI, March 5 – Georgia’s Supreme Court has declined to review the appeal of Mzia Amaghlobeli, co-founder and director of the media outlets Batumelebi and Netgazeti.

The decision, reported by Netgazeti, leaves in place the ruling of the Kutaisi Court of Appeals, which Amaghlobeli‘s legal team sought to overturn.

The two year sentence was handed down after Amaghlobeli was found guilty of assaulting a police officer in January, 2025, an incident which was documented by TV cameras as it happened.

The defense had aimed for an acquittal and a reassessment of several procedural decisions, while the prosecution argued for tougher sentencing.

The case has drawn attention internationally due to Amaghlobeli’s role in several anti-government newspapers, as opposition groups and NGOs claim the case is politically motivated.
