TBILISI, DFWatch — Georgia’s prison ministry informs that a suicide might have taken place at No 18 prison hospital.

The body of a prisoner was found in the bathroom of the prison hospital September 5. The cause of death was hanging.

The prisoner had been placed in the psychiatric ward on September 26, 2012, according to the ministry.

Shortly after the prison abuse scandal broke, the ombudsman’s office reported about several suicide attempts in prisons.

The scandal started when videos were aired on TV showing physical and sexual abuse of prisoners.

The number of deaths in Georgian prisons increases every year. The country has the highest number of per capita prison deaths in the world, and the highest per capita number of people in prison among European countries.
