Police arrest three on drug charges in Tbilisi and Kakheti

TBILISI, January 18 – Georgian police have arrested three people on drug charges after seizing what authorities described as a particularly large quantity of illegal narcotics, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

The arrests were carried out by police units from several districts of Tbilisi, as well as officers from the Kakheti regional police department. According to the Interior Ministry, the suspects were detained at different times on charges related to the illegal purchase, possession, and distribution of drugs.

During searches of the suspects’ homes and personal belongings, as well as other locations, police seized large amounts of drugs prepared for sale. The substances included dried marijuana and MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, the ministry said.

The investigation is being conducted under articles of the criminal code covering large-scale drug offenses and aiding in drug distribution that carry penalties of up to 20 years in prison or life imprisonment.
