TBILISI, DFWatch–The deadline for parliament to approve a new government is 14 or 15 January, 2016, but the procedure may finish before New Year, Georgia’s speaker of parliament said Thursday.
Irakli Garibashvili announced his resignation last night after two years as prime minister, triggering a procedure to select a successor and approve a new cabinet.
“Within seven days, parliament will select a candidate for prime minister and present him to the president,” Speaker Davit Usupashvili said.
The candidate for PM then has to select a list of cabinet members and create a government program for the next year, after which parliament will hold a vote of confidence.
“Today we will probably make a decision to appoint sessions next week, likely on December 29, unless there are any additional necessities in the process,” Usupashvili added.
