TBILISI, DFWatch–Police in Georgia Friday detained a Moldovan citizen for using an ATM skimmer to illegally obtain money.
The suspect installed a so-called ATM skimmer, a barely noticeable device installed in the card reading slot of the machine which copies information from the bank card when a customer uses the ATM.
The information gathered by the skimmer may then be used to gain unauthorized access to the victim’s account. Some criminals also install a camera to record the PIN code as the customer punches it into the number pad.
The Investigation Service of the Finance Ministry claims the suspect cooperated with several other persons and used such a device on March 31 and April 1.
The investigation is continuing and now aims at identifying the other members of group.
If convicted, the suspect may be jailed from 2 to 6 years
