Georgia’s economy grows 6.9% in second quarter

TBILISI, September 18 – Georgia’s economy expanded by 6.9% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, with transport, technology and entertainment among the strongest-performing sectors.

According to preliminary figures released by the National Statistics Office (GeoStat) on Friday, gross domestic product reached 28.15 billion Georgian lari at current prices during April-June, up from 25.58 billion lari in the same period last year. In U.S. dollar terms, GDP rose to about USD 10.51 billion from USD 9.33 billion.

Real economic growth slowed slightly from the 7.4% recorded in the second quarter of 2025. The GDP deflator, a broad measure of price changes across the economy, rose 3.0%, compared with 4.2% a year earlier.

Transport and warehousing posted one of the strongest increases, growing 19.8% from a year earlier. Information and communications grew 16.6%, arts, entertainment and recreation 17.4%, while healthcare and social services expanded 15.0%. Wholesale and retail trade grew 8.0% and manufacturing 7.3%.

Not every sector shared in the expansion. Construction contracted 4.8% year-on-year, while agriculture, forestry and fishing fell 3.5%. GeoStat identified those two sectors as the main drags on overall growth during the quarter.

Trade remained the largest part of Georgia’s economy, accounting for 14.9% of GDP in the second quarter. Real estate activities made up 9.1%, followed by manufacturing at 8.9% and information and communications at 7.6%. Public administration and defense and construction each accounted for 6.5%, while agriculture and education each represented 6.4%.

GDP per capita reached GEL 7,141.9 during the quarter, equivalent to about $2,667, compared with 6,904.3 lari, or USD 2,518, in the same quarter of 2025.
