TBILISI, July 24 – Georgian police arrested doctor Giorgi Akhobadze at his home on Friday after a court sentenced him to 25 days of administrative detention earlier the same day over a Facebook comment.

According to Interpressnews, Akhobadze had been summoned to court because of a comment he posted on Facebook. The Interior Ministry accuses him of writing an insulting comment about Vato Shakarishvili.

Administrative detention is a fast-track public order penalty system carried over from the Soviet justice system.

The case follows an earlier case when on July 8, 2026, a court fined Akhobadze 3,000 GEL (1,150 USD) in a similar case, Interpressnews reported.
