TBILISI, DFWatch–Georgia today signs the association agreement with the EU at 09:00 in Brussels.
Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili and the rest of the Georgian delegation arrived on Thursday. At Place du Luxembourg, Georgians have gathered together with flags and leaflets promoting the country.
Apart from Ghaibashvili, the other signatories to the agreement are EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso, Council President Herman Van Rompuy, and the leaders of EU’s 28 members states.
The rest of the Georgian delegation are Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze, Minister for Euro and Euro Atlantic Integration Alexi Petriashvili, Minister of Economy, Giorgi Kvirikashvili and Justice Minister Thea Tsulukiani.
After the signing ceremony, each of EU’s member states and the Georgian parliament will have to ratify it before it can come into force. About a week ago, Parliament Speaker Davit Usupashvili said that parliament plans to ratify the agreement in July, 2014.
The Georgian government is organizing a concert in Tbilisi to celebrate the signing of the agreement. It will be held at Europe Square in the capital, and be attended by the prime minister and the president who will address.
