TBILISI, March 5 – Authorities in the breakaway region of Abkhazia said Thursday that dozens of drones were detected overnight across the territory, with debris reportedly found in multiple settlements.
Adgur Gunba, who is described as the commander of the so-called air forces of Abkhazia, said the region experienced what he called an unprecedented incident involving unmanned aerial vehicles.
According to Gunba, around 30 drones were detected overnight. He said air defense systems operated jointly by Abkhazia and Russia were engaged in responding to the incident.
Gunba said that “99 percent” of the drones were destroyed by air defenses. He added that debris from downed drones was discovered in 11 populated areas.
Earlier during the night, the de facto defense ministry of Abkhazia reported that fragments of a drone had been found in a village in the Ochamchire district.
According to that statement, the drone debris damaged an electricity transmission line in the area.
