TBILISI, DFWatch – Dirk Niebel, Germany’s Federal Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development, will visit Batumi on June 2.

The German embassy informs that Niebel is planning to meet with Georgian government representatives. He will also study bilateral projects for restoring water supply.

The stable supply of drinking water and rehabilitation of sewage systems will not only bring conditions for normal social life, but will make the city more attractive for investment. Batumi is located on the shores of the Black Sea, so it has huge potential for tourism development, Dirk Niebel says.

The embassy of Germany says 95 million euro have been allocated for current projects. Within the project it has already improved the water supply for the population living in and around Batumi.

The German minister will meet with George Papuashvili, head of Constitutional Court. The main topic of conversation will be ways of improving conditions in the legal system in Georgia.

German and Georgia have cooperated in this field since 1993.

Sustainable development is impossible without a reliable legal system, the minister said.

Niebel, who is currently on a working visit to Georgia, says the country is currently facing three important challenges. First, to strengthen democracy and in this regard it is important to provide equal conditions during the parliamentary and presidential elections. Second, to strengthen the legal system, this applies independent courts, but also to create effective and transparent legal conditions within the economy, and for investments and employers. Third, Georgia’s unique nature should be protected by following international principles of biodiversity, the minister said.
