TBILISI, DFWatch–A notorious ISIS fighter who was killed in Tbilisi a month ago was planning terror attacks against diplomatic missions in Georgia and Turkey, Georgian authorities said on Tuesday.
The security police made the claim based on information found on a computer that belonged to Akhmed Chatayev, an ISIS operative who masterminded the Ataturk Airport bombings in 2016.
Chatayev’s computer and “various electronics” were found in the Tbilisi apartment where he died November 22 in a shootout with a large number of police. Two other suspects and one police officer were also killed.
The State Security Service (SUSI) released the identity of the two other suspects killed in the crossfire; Ibragim Adashev and Aslanbeg Soltakhmadov. Also one suspect who was captured alive was named; Shoaip Borziev. He is wanted by Interpol on terrorism charges.
All of them are Russian nationals and ethnic Chechens. They were Chatayev’s accomplices and are suspected of being involved in planned terror attacks with him, a spokeswoman for State Security Service (SUSI) said at a briefing Tuesday.
“As a result of operative-investigative activities carried out by Counterterrorism Department under the State Security Service of Georgia and special operation conducted on 21-22 November, those terrorist attacks have been suppressed during the planning process,” SUSI wrote in a statement.
The security service stressed the importance of its partnership with the United States’s Federal Bureau of Investigation.
“As a result of examination of data retrieved from the mobile phones of the detained and killed individuals, concrete caches have been discovered. As a result of joint activities carried out alongside American colleagues, automatic weapon cartridges, bullets, backpacks, maps, binoculars, radio sets and various evidences have been seized,” the statement reads.
