TBILISI, DFWatch–The European Youth Olympic Festival does not have proper infrastructure for people with special needs, according to Georgia’s ombudsman.
Rustavi 2 reported Sunday that wheelchair users and others with special needs who wanted to attend the festival in Tbilisi were not able to enter the stadium and move freely around.
The ombudsman underlines that people with special needs are usually shown the appropriate consideration during sports, cultural or entertainment events. When the environment is not accommodating to all, it is in effect a form of discrimination.
In a statement, the ombudsman said he asked organizers to draw up the rules for how to ensure that people with special needs are allowed to participate on an equal footing as other visitors.
He recalled that there was the same problem during a concert dedicated to opera singer Paata Burchiladze in Sports Palace in Tbilisi on February 12, 2015. The hall wasn’t adapted to accommodate people with special needs.
