TBILISI, DFWatch – The delegations of the U.S. and the EU in Georgia do not recognize the recent de facto parliamentary elections in Abkhazia as legitimate.

Both have releases statements expressing support for Georgia’s territorial integrity.

“The United States reiterates its support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders and does not recognize the legitimacy of the de facto “parliamentary” elections held in the Abkhazia region of Georgia on March 10.”

The two points statement says: “We urge Russia to fulfill all of its obligations under the 2008 ceasefire agreement, including withdrawal of forces to pre-conflict positions and free access for humanitarian assistance to Abkhazia and South Ossetia.”

The EU delegation speaks about the great importance of finding ways to solve the conflicts in the region and calls on all parties to make efforts in this direction.

The election was held last Saturday. It turned out to be incomplete as voters only elected MPs in 13 districts out of 35. A second round is scheduled for March 24.
