TBILISI, August 1 – Two former Georgian servicemen were wounded in a knife attack after an argument at a restaurant in central Gori late Thursday, according to Georgian media.
The incident began inside a restaurant on Stalin Street and later spilled outside, Interpressnews reported shortly after 1 am on Friday.
Witnesses said an argument between several people turned into a fight. At least two men suffered injuries and were taken to hospital.
Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs told Interpressnews at the time that the suspected attacker had been identified and that an investigation was underway.
Rezonansi later reported that the wounded men were out celebrating the completion of their compulsory military service.
According to information given to TV Pirveli by people at the restaurant, another group was drinking at a nearby table. The dispute allegedly began after the former servicemen asked the men to stop shouting and insulting other customers.
Witnesses said one man, who appeared to be intoxicated, then attacked the two with a knife.
Both injured men were brought to a hospital, and later discharged.
Police detained a suspect, who was taken into custody while awaiting formal charges, Rezonansi reported on Saturday.
The assault charges may lead to a prison sentence of up to five years if the suspect is convicted.
