TBILISI, DFWatch–A man suspected of beating the brother of a former government official was Monday placed in pre-trial detention by Tbilisi City Court.

Businessman Davit Kodia, brother of former police official Erekle Todua, was beaten a few days ago in Tbilisi while he was with his four year old child and a nanny.

The same day police detained a suspect and published a confession in which the detainee says the attack was an act of revenge. The suspect claims Erekle Kodua took away his property and detained him in 2008.

During Monday’s court hearing, the suspect said that he felt humiliated for years because of what the Koduas did to him and his family.

The prosecutor asked to have him detained, saying that there is threat that he might go into hiding. The defense lawyer wanted his client released on bail, arguing that he wouldn’t try to escape as he has confessed to the police by his own free will.

The judge decided to place him in pre-trial detention. The first hearing in the case is set for June 26, 2014.
