TBILISI, September 27 – Willy Sagnol has stepped down as head coach of Georgia’s national football team after more than five years in charge, ending a spell that included the country’s first appearance at a European Championship and a run to the last 16.
The Georgian Football Federation announced Sagnol’s departure on Saturday. Georgian coach Ramaz Svanadze will take over the senior national team through the end of 2028.
Sagnol had coached Georgia since February 2021 and led the team in 57 matches. His biggest success came at Euro 2024, when Georgia qualified for the tournament for the first time, advanced from the group stage and reached the round of 16.
The federation thanked the French coach for his time with the team and the emotions shared during what it called a historic journey.
Svanadze has until now coached Georgia’s under-21 side, which reached the final stage of the European Championship twice under his leadership. His assistant, Giorgi Adamia, will take charge of the under-21 team for its final three qualifying matches.
Later Saturday, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, who is also secretary general of the ruling Georgian Dream party, praised Sagnol’s impact on the national side. Kaladze said the coach had restored belief and fighting spirit to the team and highlighted Georgia’s Euro 2024 qualification, victory over Portugal and progress to the knockout stage.
Sagnol also issued a farewell message later in the day, thanking Georgia, the football federation and his players. He said he was leaving behind people with whom he had formed deep friendships and that Georgia would always hold a special place in his heart.
