TBILISI, DFWatch–The Appeals Court in Georgia left in force a decision by Tbilisi City Court to place ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili and former officials in pre-trial detention in a case concerning the violent dispersal of an anti-government demonstration on November 7, 2007.

Lawyers working for Saakashvili, Zurab Adeishvili and Davit Kezerashvili appealed the city court’s decision but their complaint was ruled inadmissible by the Appeals Court.

The three of them, who are not in Georgia, were sentenced to pre-trial detention on August 2. They are charged with abuse of powers, along with former Tbilisi Mayor Gigi Ugulava and former Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili, both of whom are in detention in Tbilisi.

On Tuesday, the Prosecutor’s Office expanded the charges against the former president, adding another charge for ordering the beating of a former parliamentarian in 2005.
