TBILISI, DFWatch–Russian border guards Sunday detained a Georgian citizen near the administrative border around Abkhazia.
A reporter for Interpressnews said Russian border guards took Tengiz Kurua from the village Orsantia, Zugdidi.
Kurua was walking along the banks of the river Enguri with his neighbor Murman Alpenadze to gather some woods, when two Russian border guards approached them and demanded to take them for a ride by horse.
Alpenadze managed to escape, but they took Kurua. Alpenadze told journalist they didn’t cross the so-called border perimeter.
There have been many detentions by Russian border guards in recent years, but these have mainly been locals in villages close to the de facto border around South Ossetia, the other of two breakaway Georgian regions that are currently controlled by Russia.
After negotiations with the de facto government and representatives of Georgia’s Interior Ministry, the detained persons have been released in the past, but in the recent weeks people have remained in detention.
