TBILISI, May 14 – Police detained student Elene Gelashvili in the courtyard of the Agricultural University in Tbilisi, after a court sentenced her to two days of administrative detention.
The detention took place on Wednesday, May 13, according to Interpressnews.
A police officer said at the scene that Gelashvili was being detained on the basis of a judge’s ruling.
Asked about the reason, the officer said the case was linked to violation of rules on assembly and demonstration.
Gelashvili was handcuffed at the site and placed in a patrol police vehicle.
Students gathered nearby reacted with applause and shouts as she was taken away.
Student groups have been active in protests during the ongoing political crisis since the October, 2024, parliamentary election, with the opposition still boycotting the assembly while demanding a re-run election.
