TBILISI, DFWatch – Giorgi Targamadze (pictured) is one of the sources for a new report former EU Ambassador to Georgia Per Eklund is writing about the election environment ahead of the parliamentary elections in October.
Eklund met with the Christian Democrats parliamentary faction on Wednesday.
Giorgi Targamadze, leader of the Christian Democrats says Eklund was head of the EU Commission’s office in Tbilisi during a difficult period in the country, so he doesn’t need to be explained what responsibilities political parties have when they act in the political arena in Georgia.
Targamadze notes that their primary goal was to inform Per Eklund about what their party is doing to create a competitive election environment in the country.
“This should create preconditions for trust in Georgian population towards political and first of all towards election processes. This will provide long-term, firm democratic transformation, state stability and EU integration. The Christian Democrats and Mr Eklund have in fact common approaches towards these topics,” Targamadze said.
Per Eklund has not commented. He is currently a Senior Fellow at Institute for Security and Development Policy in Stockholm and a Trustee at Eurasia Partnership Foundation.
