TBILISI, DFWatch–The United States has granted agreement to Tamar Taliashvili as Georgia’s next ambassador to Washington, marking an improvement in relations between the two countries.

The approval reportedly coincided with the surprise resignation of U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Robin Dunnigan, fueling speculations.

Taliashvili, a former MP from the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party and current envoy to the Council of Europe, is expected to tak up her post on July 10.

Georgian officials welcomed her appointment as a chance to “reset” relations with Washington, although analysts remain skeptical.

Analyst Zaal Anjaparidze saw the move as “a small step toward normalization”, while David Zurabishvili argued that it is merely procedural and signals no actual thaw in bilateral relations. Critics question Taliashvili’s independence, describing her as a loyal executor of government policy.

The appointment comes while many Western countries are pressuring Georgia to reverse course on a perceived turn toward authoritarianism, with U.S. senators raising concerns about rising anti-Western rhetoric from Tbilisi.
