TBILISI, March 20 – Muslims in Georgia marked the Eid al-Fitr holiday on Friday, gathering for prayers in Batumi and other mosques across the Adjara region after completing a month-long fast.
Since early morning, worshippers assembled at the Central Mosque in Batumi, where they held holiday prayers to mark the occasion. The celebration came after a month of fasting as Muslim believers observed Ramadan.
Georgia’s mufti, Adam Shantadze, addressed those gathered at the mosque, congratulating them on the holiday and speaking about its significance. He also used the occasion to express condolences to Georgia’s Christian community following the death of Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II, whose passing this week has put the country into a period of mourning.
Interpressnews reported that Eid was also celebrated in other mosques across Adjara, the autonomous region in southwestern Georgia where much of the country’s Muslim population lives.
