TBILISI, DFWatch — A member of parliament from Saakashvili’s National Movement party is being called in for questioning regarding the beating of a businessman.

According to the prosecutor’s office, Paata Lezhava on September 23, 2012 beat businessman Mamuka Sharashenidze at the National Movement’s office in Vani, small town in western Georgia, which he represents in parliament as a majoritarian delegate.

Also the local council chair Davit Kakabadze is under investigation in the case.

Prosecutors allege that the two beat Sharashenidze because he had publicly made critical remarks regarding the prison abuse videos. The beating injured Lezhava’s ribs.

Evidence also reveals that MP Paata Lezhava was there when incident took place. Sharashenidze says the MP brought him to the UNM office and took the lead in his beating.

The National Movement press office says Paata Lezhava is currently abroad.
