TBILISI, DFWatch–The pardon commission has sent the president a list of more than 150 prisoners who they recommend be pardoned.
Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili told journalists after a commission session on Sunday that 120 of the prisoners will be released immediately, while the rest may get their sentence halved.
The commission also reviewed cases of prisoners who are sentenced for serious crimes and a few of them received positive recommendation after a vote.
Another detail of the commission’s decision is that one minor should get the sentence reduced to half and three minors be released. Eight female prisoners will be pardoned; four will have the sentence reduced to half.
The commission session lasted more than six hours and the number of cases reviewed was 462.
Prisoners with a positive recommendation will be pardoned before October 25, commission chair Elene Tevdoradze said after session.
It is the prerogative of the president to pardon prisoners. A new president will be elected on October 27, but outgoing president Mikheil Saakashvili will be in power until the inauguration ceremony.
