TBILISI, October 7 – Georgia’s State Security Service says it has arrested a Georgian citizen accused of trying to sell uranium-238 worth USD 700,000 to a foreign national.

The story was reported by Interpressnews Wednesday and quoted the domestic intelligence agency SSS saying that the arrest followed a joint operation by its counterintelligence and special operations departments over the alleged illegal handling of nuclear material.

The intel agency also published a video of the arrest, which was posted online by the news agency.

According to the State Security Service, the suspect had uranium-238 in his possession and planned to sell it to a citizen of another country for USD 700,000.

An investigation has been opened under Article 230 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which in this case carries a possible prison sentence of up to 10 years.
