Lithuania expands visa ban to more Georgian officials

(Interpressnews.)

TBILISI, DFWatch–Lithuania has imposed visa sanctions on ten more Georgian citizens, effectively barring them from entering the country.

This brings the total number of Georgian nationals facing such restrictions to 112, according to a searchable database maintained by Lithuania’s Migration Department.

The individuals newly added to the list include judges, prosecutors, parliament members, and government officials. Past sanctions were linked to perceived democratic erosion and repression in Georgia. In December 2024, Lithuania and Estonia had earlier banned 74 officials—including Georgia’s prime minister and interior minister—in response to violent crackdowns on pro-European protests and concerns over judicial independence.

Back then, Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry urged swift action against Georgian figures implicated in detaining opposition members and has called for broader EU-level measures.

This latest decision follows a trend among some European Union member states of responding unilaterally to political developments in Georgia. While the EU as a bloc has not imposed sanctions, several individual countries have taken steps in response to growing concerns over rule-of-law issues and perceived democratic backsliding under the current government.

The list of targeted persons was posted the Migration Department’s website. The sanctioned individuals are prohibited from entering Lithuanian territory, but the restrictions do not automatically apply elsewhere in the EU.
