TBILISI, DFWatch–Hearings in the trial of a doctor who was arrested on his way home from an opposition rally last December have been tense. Now, the judge has closed the hearings to the media.

Hearings so far have been marked by verbal altercations between the prosecution and defense lawyers.

Giorgi Akhobadze, a medical doctor, was detained on December 7 while walking home from a rally on Rustaveli Avenue. Prosecutors allege he was in possession of a large quantity of alpha-PVP, a synthetic stimulant. He has been charged under Article 260 (Part 6) of Georgia’s criminal code, which covers illegal possession of large quantities of narcotics.

Akhobadze, who denies the charges, claims the drugs were planted during his arrest and has accused police of politically motivated targeting. His defense team argues there is no credible evidence and points to procedural violations, including an allegedly falsified search report and dubious DNA evidence.

Akhobadze remains in pretrial detention. Supporters view him as a political prisoner.
