TBILISI, DFWatch-–Bidzina Ivanishvili, founder and honorary chairman of Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream party, has declined a meeting with U.S. Ambassador Robin Dunnigan, explaining that he would not be free to represent the country’s interests while under sanctions.
Dunnigan had sought to deliver a message from the Trump administration regarding the reset in U.S.-Georgia relations, following a cooling in ties over the winter.
The meeting was initially suggested by Secretary of State Marco Rubio on May 22, according to the U.S. Embassy, and aimed to outline specific steps the Georgian government could take to demonstrate its commitment to revitalizing the bilateral partnership.
In a public statement, Ivanishvili cited personal sanctions directed at himself, which he considers a form of pressure, and explained that engaging in discussions under such conditions would be inappropriate and could compromise state decisions.
Ivanishvili proposed that Ambassador Dunnigan meet with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze instead, emphasizing that the Prime Minister is not subject to any sanctions and would not be influenced by personal considerations. The ambassador declined, a move which Ivanishvili interpreted as a sign that the invitation had more to do with him personally than genuine diplomatic engagement.
Relations between Georgia and the United States are currently strained by the perceived democratic backsliding and an alleged falsified election last October. U.S. sanctions imposed sanctions on Ivanishvili in December, 2024 for allegedly undermining democratic institutions and promoting Russian interests. Years before, Ivanishvili has subject to asset freeze by a Swiss bank, which he interpreted as political blackmail. Recently, he initiated legal action against Julius Baer, accusing it of misapplying U.S. sanctions and engaging in political blackmail.
Opposition figures criticized Ivanishvili’s decision, claiming that it’s a deliberate attempt to distance Georgia from its Western allies.
GD officials, meanwhile, maintained that they remain open to constructive dialogue and are committed to resetting relations with the United States on a foundation of mutual respect and shared interests.
