TBILISI, August 4 – Georgian security officials have arrested two company directors accused of supplying horse meat to public kindergartens while billing it as beef.
The alleged fraud involved kindergartens in the municipalities of Marneuli and Kareli, the State Security Service said on Tuesday.
According to the agency, the companies BGM 1 and Georgian Meat Products Farm had won public tenders to supply beef to kindergarten networks in the two municipalities.
Investigators allege that in May 2026, the company directors delivered horse meat instead of beef and falsely presented it as the product required under the contracts.
The State Security Service said the scheme allowed the suspects to obtain a large amount of public money through fraud.
Officers from the agency’s Anti-Corruption Department arrested the two people under a court order.
The investigation is being conducted under provisions of Georgia’s Criminal Code covering large-scale fraud and falsification. The charges carry possible prison sentences of six to nine years.
