TBILISI, January 19 – Heavy snowfall is disrupting daily life across Georgia, with eastern Kakheti and the capital Tbilisi both reporting major cleanup operations and travel limits.
In Kakheti, officials said on Sunday that intense snow and ice led to restrictions on the Vaziani–Gombori–Telavi road, allowing traffic only for high-clearance vehicles. They also said public transport in several municipalities could not start operating as usual, while road crews spread road salt and cleared snow.
By Monday morning, conditions were still severe on the same route. Movement on the Vaziani–Gombori–Telavi highway remained limited to high-clearance vehicles, according to Interpressnews, with police deployed near the Shuamta Monastery area to control traffic for safety. Telavi was described as seeing especially heavy precipitation, and municipal transport there was halted, with disruptions also reported on central streets.
The snowfall also affected electricity supply in Kakheti. According to the reports, some customers in the region lost power. Utility company Energo-Pro Georgia said technical teams were working actively and that electricity would be restored step by step. Local authorities said roads were being cleared on all problematic sections and treated with road salt.
In Tbilisi, Mayor Kakha Kaladze said later on Monday that work to prevent snow-related disruptions was continuing “nonstop” across the city. He said central streets had been cleared and that both private cars and public transport were moving without interruption, while acknowledging ongoing issues in some outlying, newly added areas and on internal roads and dead-end streets that would be tackled later.
Kaladze urged drivers not to venture out in the streets without winter tires.
