TBILISI, DFWatch — Georgia’s ambassador to the U.S. resigned on Thursday. A new ambassador should be presented by the new government, he says.

Temur Iakobashvili, Georgia’s Ambassador to the U.S., posted a note about his decision on Facebook, where he writes that he has informed the government.

“I want to inform you that I consider my mission on this post fulfilled and I am sure new government should be presented in Washington by new ambassador,” he writes. “In the next few months I will be busy to peacefully transfer activity here.”

In his posting, the Georgian Ambassador thanks President Mikheil Saakashvili for giving him the opportunity to work for the good of the country.

Parliament approved Temur Iakobashivli as ambassador in 2010. Under Georgian law, parliament approves ambassadors, which are presented by the president. The country’s president can personally make a decision to fire an ambassador, but in this case Iakobashvili made the decision himself.

It is not yet known who will be Georgia’s new ambassador to the U.S.
