TBILISI, DFWatch – Georgia’s national basketball team won against Latvia on August 24, strengthening its position in the qualification for the European championship next year.

The match ended 79:76, which puts Georgia at the top of Group D. The qualification match for EuroBasket 2013 was played in Tbilisi’s Sport’s Palace.

The Georgian team was on the way to a clear victory, but in the last three minutes the situation changed. The team from Latvia made inroads and from the position 76:64, it scored several times an equalized 76:76 when there were only 56 seconds left of the match.

Jacob Pullen, a Georgia team member from Italy, then scored a three point score at the last second, dropping the ball as the siren went off, marking the end of the match.

Georgia’s next match will be played on August 27 in the Netherlands. If it wins against Netherlands, Georgia will be at the top of the first circle of qualification games.

But currently Bosnia-Herzegovina is at the top of Group D, after having played four matches garnering seven points, followed by Georgia with three games and six points; Latvia – three games and four points, Romania three games and four points and Netherlands – three games and three points.
