Georgia blocks vital mountain road following traffic incident

(Interpressnews.)

TBILISI, January 28 – Traffic has been fully halted on a key stretch of Georgia’s main northbound highway after a road accident, authorities said on Wednesday, as reported by Interpressnews.

The restriction applies to the Zhinvali–Ananuri section of the international Mtskheta–Stepantsminda–Larsi road, a vital transit route that links the South Caucasus with the Russian Federation through the only land crossing.

Georgia’s Roads Department, part of the Infrastructure Ministry, said all types of vehicles are temporarily banned from using the affected segment. Officials said the closure was imposed due to a traffic accident on the road. The blocked section lies between the Zhinvali reservoir and Ananuri.

The Mtskheta–Stepantsminda–Lars route is Georgia’s only direct road connection to Russia and is a vital transport link for the region used by freight trucks, tourists, and local traffic. Daily traffic typically includes 500 to 600 trucks entering Russia’s North Ossetian Republic and 300 to 350 entering Georgia, according to Kommersant.

Update: Traffic was reopened early morning January 29. See our latest update.
