TBILISI, DFWatch–In Georgia, Interior Minister Irakli Gharibashvili plans to release a video today at a meeting where also foreign diplomats will be present.

The video is said to contain strong scenes of sexual abuse of prisoners and was discovered in an underground weapons cache dug up in the west of Georgia a few days ago.

Member of Parliament Tina Khidasheli from the Georgian Dream coalition, said Tuesday on the TV talk show Positsia that ‘society will get a really unfortunate surprise’.

“I as a person, who thought that I had almost complete information of what was happening in the prisons and preliminary isolators, would never have imagined to live in a country where such things could happen,” she said.

“Who is guilty, who did this, who filmed this and why? I don’t know.”

According to the website epn.ge, the video contains scenes of male prisoners being raped.

In September 2012, two weeks before the parliamentary election, a former prison guard went public with a handful of videos which contained similar scenes, filmed at Gldani prison in north Tbilisi.

The resulting reaction with two of President Saakashvili’s ministers resigning and a wave of protests marked the final days before the election.
